DEFINING METADATA AND INDEXING CRITERIA TO DESCRIBE A DOCUMENTARY ON AUDIOVISUAL REPOSITORY

This paper is part of a research of post-graduation in Information Science, which has been considered the indexing policy as an element inside an information policy to manage audiovisual collections on audiovisual repository. It presents metadata and indexing criteria that contributed to the descriptive and thematic representation of a documentary produced as an undergraduate thesis at a Brazilian university. It also discusses the stages of the content analysis method, by adopting the description of sound and moving images as a technique from information representation in the audiovisual indexing process. In this respect, the indexing of a documentary on online catalog was compared to the indexing made on audiovisual repository, by using the DSpace software, aiming to define metadata and indexing criteria to describe documentaries through the Dublin Core format to increase the possibilities of recovering information, if compared to the MARC format cataloging. The indexing process of moving images is discussed based on some concepts about the stages of indexing, the audiovisual description and the levels of image analysis, aiming to establish guidelines and criteria to index audiovisual information, as well as to make librarians decide on controlled or natural indexing language as part of the system recall, specificity and exhaustivity or depth of indexing. As partial results, the paper concludes there are specific metadata and indexing criteria to each one of the categories of audiovisual content produced at a Brazilian university, focusing on carrying out an information policy to manage audiovisual collections.
