Research and Development of Phytomedicines: Report of Experience on a Brazilian Pharmaceutical Company

It is reported five years of professional experience in a Brazilian pharmaceutical company. During this period, was set up a technical team and we sought to develop a line of phytomedicines from scientific literature, use of national studies already made adjustments as well as international research at the Brazilian regulatory standard. As a result of this professional activity included five herbal drugs: hard capsules with the extract of soy aglycones isoflavones in interaction with other company and university; tablets standardized extract of frankincense (Boswellia serrata) indicated in inflammatory bowel diseases; tablets of standardized extract of devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) given in rheumatic diseases; soft gelatin capsules with essential oil of peppermint (Mentha piperita) recommended in spastic phase of irritable bowel syndrome; and finally ointment with standardized extract from the bark of barbatimão (Stryphnodendron adstringens) as indicated in healing of decubitus ulcers stages I and II. Despite the difficulties and complexity of compliance with the requirements of the chain of research and development, this report shows that activity is possible, with the generation of herbal products with safe, effective and quality levels compatible with the national and international regulatory requirements.
