Leaf Anatomy of Ocimum basilicum L. “Genovese” (Lamiaceae)

The botanical control of species especially anatomical is necessary for the pharmaceutical and spices industries. Nevertheless, there are few species that had their characteristics analyzed. Among these aim Ocimum species, which have a complexity because of the widespread occurrence of varieties and cultivars. This work aimed to characterize anatomically the leaves of Ocimum basilicum L. 'Genovese'. Leaves of plants grown at UNITAU, Taubate, SP, were collected and subjected to the usual techniques of histology. The leaves blades have in front view, epidermal cells sinuous anticlinal walls on both sides, amphistomatic, with diacytic stomata; uniseriate and multicellular trichomes, and sessile glandular trichomes, most frequently in the midrib region, and peltate and capitate glandular trichomes. The petiole, in transverse view, has a concave-convex section, uniseriate epidermis, cuticle smooth and thin, and at the upper epidermis numerous uniseriate trichomes were observed, as well as uni-tricelular and glandular trichomes with unicellular pedicel and unicellular capitate glands, collateral vascular bundle is present in the form of shallow open arc with few sclerenchyma fibers. The set of anatomical characters observed in this study complement the information for the species Ocimum basilicum, describing unpublished data to the cultivar. This enables a more accurate and efficient diagnosis of the cultivar.
