Resumo: The urban violence practiced by adolescents has reached high levels in the last ten years; this picture demands a profound analysis of its multiple causes, triggering a psychic, relational, political, social and economic issue which needs to be empirically checked so as to formulate scientific propositions of prevention and/or intervention. This study’s general objective deals with the social representation identification on adolescence, violence and (future) life project of institutionalized youth in conflict with criminal law and those who are not institutionalized, with no criminal law conflict. It was about a field study inserted in a multimethod approach that used a qualitative and quantitative methodology. The investigation took place in a resocializing institution of deprivation of liberty (104 adolescents) and public schools (104 adolescents) in the outskirts of the capital city of João Pessoa, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, with a total of 208 participants. We used the Free Word Association Technique (TALP) whose data were processed through the software Tri-Deux-Mots (version 2.2). The results aimed at the adolescence social representations (trigger 1) in entertainment, games and dates that were similar for the two groups of adolescents; violence (trigger 2) was differently represented according to the group: the adolescents supported the social, economic and political representations and the offender adolescents presented objective expressions of violence, such as murdering, stealing and beating; the future (trigger 3) aimed at representations of life-changing situations for both groups of adolescents.
