In Amazon literature, specially that concerning rubber plantations, Ferreira de Castro’s book A Selva (The Jungle) is an outstanding example of the seringal representation and of life in the rain forest. Discussing that book seems important to reflect upon the seringal representations. That author is not seduced into civilization’s shine of the Belle Époque cities - Manaus and Belém in particular- nor into Amazon bright green nature. On the contrary: he focuses rubber plantations workers, their social relationships, and the seringal quotidian life. These are the aspects that this article discusses with emphasis upon their literary and social links. Key-words: Amazon, amazon literature, seringal. |
