Tree regenerating in a restinga wood in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

With the aim to study the regenerating component relations with the tree stratum and the natural regenerating aspects of these species, floristic and phytosociological survey of the regenerating individuals was carried out in a restinga wood in Itapuã State Park, Viamão/RS. Plots of 1 and 4 m2 were sampled for the seedlings (5 cm ≤ height < 1 m) and juveniles (height ≥ 1 m, DBH < 5 cm), respectively. Usual phytosociological parameters, species regenerating potential and regenerating rate were estimated, besides the register of some ecological characteristics. Species richness and diversity were similar among the three growth stages, and similarities were higher than 70%. Most species had negative regenerating rate and Myrtaceae species summed more than 60% of regenerating potential. Of the surveyed species, 91.3% were zoochoric, 34.8% were pioneer, 39.1% were early secondary, and 26.1% were late secondary. Results indicated that most species have a good regenerating capacity.
