Resumo: This article aims to scan the current medical literature on palliative care in Brazil. This is an integrative review using the VHL, SciELO, LILACS and PubMed as databases over the last 5 years. 252 articles on the topic were evaluated with an emphasis on a synthesis of the most recent knowledge and greater scientific consistency. Originally, Palliative Care focused on patients in the final stages of life. Today, it is considered that they go beyond this practice: they must be available to patients and their families throughout the process of an illness that threatens the continuity of life and during mourning. It is concluded that palliative care aims to offer adequate and dignified care to patients with and without curative possibilities.
