Resumo: This paper is a reading of “As Caravanas”, a song from Chico Buarque, which is well-nigh a treatise on social exclusion, racism and the islamophobia. It explores the ambiguity of Rio’s toponymy, seeing the favelas not merely as the stage for lethal police incursions, but also as authentic centers of black culture. At the same time, it proposes a comparison with our contemporary reality anchored in recent news. In the manner of Antonio Candido, this analysis identifies a cleavage point in the poem that corresponds to a cleavage in the social body of Brazil rooted in entrenched slavery.
