Industrial Deconcentration in Brazil: an analysis of the municipal GDP between 1996 and 2010

Resumo: This study analyzes the process of industrial deconcentration in Brazil in the recent last years, specifically between 1996 and 2010. Historically, São Paulo was the state that presented the greatest concentration, as well its capital and metropolitan region. Its pinnacle of concentration happened in 1970s and since then it began to deconcentrate. This study’s results show that it continues to deconcentrate, slowly, however. The capital of the state of São Paulo and its metropolitan area are the places where the deconcentration process is more intense in comparison with other cities. The data also show that the deconcentration process is concentrated, which means that only medium-sized cities increased their industrial production.

Históricamente, São Paulo fue el Estado donde la concentración fue más grande, principalmente en la capital y su región metropolitana. El auge de la concentración fue en la década de 1970 y desde entonces ocurre el proceso de desconcentración. Los resultados de este estudio muestran que la desconcentración se mantiene, aunque de forma lenta. La capital de São Paulo y su región metropolitana son los sitios en los cuales el proceso es más intenso que en otras ciudades. Los datos también revelan que la desconcentración está concentrada, lo que significa que solo las ciudades medianas aumentaron su producción industrial.O presente estudo analisa o processo de desconcentração industrial no Brasil nos últimos anos, especificamente entre 1996 e 2010. A capital paulistana e sua região metropolitana são os locais onde o processo é mais intenso em comparação a outras cidades.
