THE HISTORICAL MAPS OF RIO DE JANEIRO AND THE UNDERPRIVILEGED

Resumo: The “underprivileged” are a category that includes the miserable, abandoned, helpless and unprotected, including poor people, travelers, beggars, freed people and in some cases slaves. As they were a social segment without resources, they did not have the privilege of being buried inside churches as was the custom of the elite until 1850, so their bodies were relegated to public spaces such as the squares, fields and gardens of the city of Rio de Janeiro, which gave rise to the cemeteries of the “underprivileged”. The article seeks to identify these locations through the analysis of historical maps, primary and secondary documentation, as well as showing that even with the historical erasure of official sources, archeology reveals information buried in the city.

Por ser un segmento social sin recursos, no tenían el privilegio de ser enterrados en el interior de iglesias, como era costumbre de la élite carioca hasta 1850, por lo que sus cuerpos fueron relegados a espacios públicos como las plazas, campos y jardines de la ciudad. de Río de Janeiro, que dio origen a los cementerios de los “desfavorecidos”. El artículo busca identificar estas localidades a través del análisis de mapas históricos, documentación primaria y secundaria, además de mostrar que aun con el borrado histórico de fuentes oficiales, la arqueología revela información sepultada en la ciudad.Os “desvalidos” compõem uma categoria que integra os miseráveis, abandonados, desamparados e desprotegidos, incluindo pessoas pobres, viajantes, mendigos, alforriados e, em alguns casos, escravizados. Por ser um segmento social sem recursos, não tinham o privilégio de serem enterrados no interior das igrejas conforme costume da elite carioca até 1850, de modo que seus corpos eram relegados aos espaços públicos como os largos, campos e rocios da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, que deram origem aos cemitérios dos “desvalidos”.
