Avaliação dento-esquelética comparando duas técnicas cirúrgicas para expansão rápida maxilar

The purpose of this study was to assess dental and skeletal changes occurred after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SA-RME) when compared two types of osteomomy Le Fort I: Bell (1976); Bennett e Wolford (1982). The sample comprised 27 white patients, at ages ranging from 17 to 40 years, 12 females and 15 males. All patients were adults presenting deficiency in the transversal maxillary growth, they hadn’t been subjected to previous orthodontic treatment and needed SA-RME for their orthodontic treatments. Linear and angular measurements were obtained from lateral and posteroanterior cephalometric tracings and statistically analyzed in the early phase, shortly after the stabilization of the Hirax appliance and at 3 months of retention. The SA-RME promoted an increase in the in the widths of the apical bone base of the maxilla (p<0. 01) and the nasal cavity (p<0. 01), which remained constant after 3 months of retention there were a significant posterior lowering of the maxilla. It was found an increase in the upper (p<0. 01) and lower intermolar distances (p<0. 01) shortly after the appliance stabilization. After 3 months of retention, it was observed that the central upper incisors tip towards the palatine (p<0. 01). Posteroanterior teleradiography showed that the distance between the apices and the distance between the crowns increased (p<0. 01) shortly after the appliance stabilization. After 3 months of retention, a significant increase was verified in the interincisal angle.
