Planning attitudes of Brazilian university librarians

Resumo: This research aims at the identification of the planning altitudes of those responsible for the management of Brazilian university libraries. Thirty percent ofthe librarians working in govemment and private libraries from the tive geographicalregions of Braziltook part in this research. The first part of this work concems the identificationof the institutions, the libraries and the librarians in charge. In the second part of this research, statements related to the planning altitude are presented in a scale of ordinal nature, known as Likert Scale The data are shown in tables and the statistic analyses wereperformed with a chi-square test and a continued co"ection at leveIp=O,005. The ana/ysisevidenced that factors such as type of institution, size of collection, number of employees, length of employee's permanence at work and participation in courses ancUorevents related to management formation, updating, and improvement affect significantly the planning altitudes which favor prospective planning. Nevertheless, in a more careful analysis of each question, one can notice the presence of altitudes eminent/y traditionalist,which hinders any attitude towards a proactive planning.

A amostra representa 15% das bibliotecas, oficiais e particulares, dispersas geograficamente entre as cinco regiões brasileiras. O instrumento subdividise em duas partes: a primeira compõe-se de questões referentes à identificação da instituição, da biblioteca e do bibliotecário responsável; a segunda está composta. especificamente. por afirmativas relativas às atitudes de planejamento, elaborada segundo uma escala de natureza ordinal, conhecida como Escala de Likert. Para a análise estatfstica utilizou-se o teste de qui-quadrado com co"eção de continuidade. ao nível de p=O,05. Nos resultados observou-se que fatores como o tipo da instituio, tamanho do acervo, número de funcionários. tempo de serviço na profissão e participação em cursos e/ou eventos de capacitação gerencial. atualização e aperfeiçoamento interferem significativamente nas atitudes de planejamento destes bibliotecários. Os mesmos apresentam atitudes positivamente favoráveis ao planejamento prospectivo.
