Resumo: Objectives: The disposal of blood bags and their blood components representes a significant percentagem of the total collected bags, suggesting the need for improvements in quality management during blood processing and storage. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify and analyze aspects related to the disposal of blood bags at the Blood Bank of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Goiás (BS-HC-UFG/EBSERH) between January 2019 and December 2021. Material and methods: Retrospective study based on analyses of secundar database on blood donation at BS-HC-UFG. The data were collected from the Blood Network system, and statistical analysis was performed using the following variables: number of blood bags collected, blood components produced and discarded, and main reasons for disposal. Results: During the analysed period, there were 12,826 blood donations, production of 30,715 blood componets, and a discard rate of 26,6%. At the Blood Bank, fresh frozen plasma was the most discarded blood componet, with approximately 53.5% of this disposal due to insuficiente volume, while the discarding of red blood cell concentrates and random platelets was mostly due to positive or inconclusive serology. At the Transfusion Agency, 20.7% of the discards were random platelet concentrates, mainly due to expiration date (92%). Conclusion: The results show a considerable discard rate due to avoidable reaons highlightthing the importance of quality management in blood transfusion services and suggesting the need for preventive actions to reduce discard rates.
