Resumo: In this article we analyze the first edition of the JB/Mesbla Amateur Film Festival (1965), outlining the forces that motivated its creation and the involvement of the Brazilian cinematographic field in the realization of the contest. Through texts on the pages of Jornal do Brasil, we identifiy speeches and expectations around the festival, many of them centered on the formative importance of the amateur practice in the professionalization of Brazilian cinema. Finally, we will focus on the trajectory of filmmaker Xavier de Oliveira and the short film Escravos de Job. The only competing film in 1965 with a copy available for viewing, we analyze how the short film responds to the cultural field of the time and how the festival worked, in fact, as a gateway to the professional practice of cinema.

A través de textos de las páginas de Jornal do Brasil, identificamos discursos y expectativas en torno al festival, muchos de ellos centrados en la importancia formativa del cine en la profesionalización del cine brasileño. Finalmente, nos centraremos en la trayectoria del cineasta Xavier de Oliveira y el cortometraje Escravos de Job. Única película competidora en 1965 con copia disponible para visionado, analizamos cómo responde un cortometraje al campo cultural de la época y cómo el festival funcionó, de hecho, como puerta de entrada al ejercicio profesional del cine.No presente artigo analisamos a primeira edição do Festival de Cinema Amador JB/Mesbla (1965), delineando as forças que motivaram a sua criação e o envolvimento do campo cinematográfico brasileiro na realização do concurso. Através de textos das páginas do Jornal do Brasil, identificamos discursos e expectativas em torno do festival, muitos deles centrados na importância formativa do cineamadorismo na profissionalização do cinema brasileiro. Por fim, nos deteremos na trajetória do cineasta Xavier de Oliveira e no curta-metragem Escravos de Job.
