Resumo: It is considered in this article the relevance of photography to historiography, observing that the use of this visual resource is still too recent and limited. Historians, in spite of accepting the diverse range of document sources, prefer written sources in spite of visual or oral ones. In this sense, it is shown the central role that image plays in contemporary times and its contribution to lead historians to consider the visual dimension of society.

Los historiadores, aunque admitieron la gama de fuentes documentales, prefieren las fuentes escritas sobre el visual y oral. En esta perspectiva, buscando reflejar la importancia de la imagen en la contemporaneidad y su contribución para que los historiadores piensen el tamaño visual de la sociedad. Neste artigo discute-se a importância da fotografia para a historiografia, observando- se que o uso desta fonte visual ainda é muito recente e restrito. Os historiadores, apesar de admitir a variada gama de fontes documentais, preferem as fontes escritas em detrimento do visual e da oral. Nesta perspectiva, procura-se refletir a centralidade da imagem na contemporaneidade e sua contribuição para historiadores pensar a dimensão visual da sociedade.
