Summary: The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) estimates that in 2060 Brazil will have 33 million elderly people. In the present study, we sought to assess the perception of finitude of a group of non-institutionalized elderly people in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The results showed that 70% of the elderly studied are aware that death is a natural process that is part of life, and about 27.6% are totally at odds that death is seen as suffering and loneliness.
