Deus e deuses nos meandros do Livro do Desassossego: uma função do estilo (God and Gods in The Book of Disquiet: a function of style)

O vocábulo Deus/deuses aparece cerca de cem vezes no Livro do Desassossego – a obra inacabada de Fernando Pessoa –, entrelaçado à matéria-prima do livro: o dilaceramento, a angústia, a depressão. Algumas leituras da obra de Pessoa enxergam nessa negatividade uma voz profética que declara a morte de Deus e a crise da razão moderna – absolutos destituídos de seu lugar na cultura ocidental. No âmbito da Teopoética, a “resposta” de Pessoa à crise da modernidade pode ser lida como teologia apofática ou, no extremo, como mística da negação. Sem negar a validade dessas leituras, que metodologicamente tendem a vincular o poeta a seu momento histórico, e tomando-as como ponto de partida, o artigo faz uma leitura do Livro do Desassossego, mais particularmente da temática “Deus”, pelo viés metodológico do interesse pelo texto de Pessoa. Assim, por princípio e método, na esteira de Eduardo Lourenço, Manuel Gusmão e outros críticos da obra pessoana, o Deus e os deuses do poeta português configuram construção de linguagem, efeitos de sentido ou, no expresso asserto de Pessoa, “uma função do estilo”.  Abstract The word God/gods appears around one hundred times in the Book of Disquiet – the unfinished work by Fernando Pessoa - interwoven with the book raw material: laceration, anguish, depression. Some readings of Pessoa’s work see on this negativity a prophetic voice that states the death of God and the crisis of modern reason – absolute terms deprived of their place in western culture. In Theopoetics, Pessoa’s “answer” to the crisis of modernity can be read as apophatic theology or, in extreme terms, as the mystics of denial.  Without denying the value of theses readings that from the methodological point of view tend to associate the poet with his historical moment, and taking them as the starting point, this paper analyses the Book of Disquiet more specifically on the topic of “God”, using the methodological approach of the interest in Pessoa’s text. Therefore, by principle and method and following the path of Eduardo Lourenço, Manuel Gusmão and other critics of Pessoa’s work, the God or gods of the Portuguese poet are a language construction, an effect of meaning or in Pessoa’s correct assertion “a function of style”.
