Resumo: | Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a primary myocardial disease with a wide variety of clinical presentation and different morphological characteristics. It is also the most common heart disease in cats. In the absence of other causes of left ventricular hypertrophy, HCM is diagnosed. The ventricular hypertrophy promotes diastolic dysfunction since it increases stiffness and reduces the ability of correct relaxation of the myocardium. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HCM in the feline population, characterize epidemiologically positive population and also assess by echocardiography some parameters and relate these with previously published studies. In this study 11% of cats with 6 years or more had HCM. The epidemiological and phenotype distribution is highly variable. The average age at diagnosis of this study was 6.4 years, with the majority having more than 7 years. This study suggests the correlation of HCM with systolic anterior motion and a greater tendency of atrial dilatation with a more severe degree of hypertrophy. A large number of cats belonging to hypertrophic ventricular groups, may have HCM, thereby we should expect an increase in the prevalence in the population of cats HCM if these were included. |
