Cerebral and spinal cord toxoplasmosis: a clinical case report

Resumo: The authors describe a case of cerebral and spinal cord Toxoplasmosis as the first manifestation of AIDS, in a patient who’s HIV infection was unknown.In this context, opportunistic infections usually appear, when the number of TCD4 lymphocytes are under 200 cells/μL.Toxoplasmosis is the most frequent cause of focal cerebral injuries in patients infected with HIV; however, Spinal cord injury due to Toxoplasma gondii is very unusual. We have only found a total of 16 published cases in the medical literature since 1988.Given the fact of the rarity of spinal cord injury by Toxoplasmosis, some theoretical considerations are made, focused on the clinical management of the Myelopathy in HIV patients.

As infecções oportunistas surgem habitualmente, neste contexto, quando o número de linfócitos T CD4 + é inferior a 200 células/μL.A toxoplasmose é a causa mais frequente de lesões focais do SNC (Sistema Nervoso Central) nos doentes infectados por VIH; no entanto, o envolvimento da medula espinhal por Toxoplasma gondii é muito raro. Desde 1988 apenas encontramos publicados na literatura um total de 16 casos.
