In Portugal, considering the high level of unemployment in the last years, the option for the entrepreneurship has been seen as a possible way to get in the labour market. Considering that unemployment affects mostly weaker groups, as women and youth, there is a trend to increase the number of business developed by women. In this regard, the present study pretends to analyze the feminine entrepreneurship, examining factors as: motives to develop a business (necessity vs. opportunity), business classically associated to women (short dimension in traditionally feminine areas as the utilities), family situation and the influence that it brings to take the decision to develop a business, facilitators factors, difficulties experienced by the entrepreneurs and the barriers to the feminine entrepreneurship. In behalf of the mentioned factors above, it was applied a questionnaire to a sample of 34 business women in the central zone of the country. In this research we have mobilized study results that provided data about the specifity of the feminine entrepreneurship, although this specifities are not just about the feminine characteristics, but it is about the structural and context factors, as referred by Ahl(2002). Considering the presented barriers, the most important ones were related to the access to credit, lack of training, lack of equity capital to start the investment and overload with family tasks, which support the idea of Ahl that the factors that affect negatively the feminine entrepreneurship are structural, not women handicaps; the lack of training in areas as entrepreneurship/management, sales, marketing it is something that has been mentioned in literature as men and women handicaps, caused by the lack of training in schools and universities. In this study we concluded that feminine entrepreneurship is widely growing in Portugal, there are still barriers, as the liability between business and family, that are distinguished between business undertaken by men and women. Most of the barriers in the feminine entrepreneurship lies in structural factors rather then the existence of handicaps among men and women entrepreneurs. |
