It’s an autossomal dominant disease, with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity, that is more common in caucasian women, between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. Typical symptoms include progressive bilateral hearing loss, sometimes accompanied by vertigo and tinnitus. The audiometric findings include conductive or mixed hearing loss, absence of stapedial reflexes and normal or type As tympanogram. The treatment may undergo a medical and / or surgical approach, with stapedotomy / stapedectomy being the surgical treatment of choice. The aim of this thesis is to do a bibliographic revision about this theme by identifying new etiology factors, clinical manifestations and innovative forms of diagnosis and treatment.A otosclerose, descrita pela primeira vez em 1704 por António Valsava, caracteriza-se pela proliferação óssea da cápsula ótica, principalmente ao nível da janela vestibular (oval), da qual resulta habitualmente fixação do estribo. É uma doença hereditária autossómica dominante com penetrância incompleta e expressividade variável, mais comum em mulheres caucasianas, entre os 20 e os 40 anos. Os sintomas típicos incluem perda auditiva progressiva bilateral, por vezes acompanhada de vertigens e acufenos. Os achados audiométricos compreendem perda auditiva de transmissão ou mista, ausência de reflexos estapédicos e timpanograma normal ou do tipo As. O tratamento poderá passar por uma abordagem médica e/ou cirúrgica, sendo a estapedotomia/estapedectomia o tratamento cirúrgico de eleição.
