The study of 'Territory' and 'Urban Morphology' at the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (1962-1974)

The study of 'Territory' and 'Urban Morphology' was introduced at the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) in the early 1960s of the twentieth century, when architect Nuno Portas joined this public research institution. In this Laboratory, in the Construction and Housing Division of the Buildings and Bridges Department, the different lines of research for the study of architecture and urbanism were defined in dialogue with the Portuguese Ministry of Public Works, but also considering the knowledge that Nuno Portas had about the ongoing research works developed in other foreign research centres. The wealth of information present in the various works developed by this team of architect-researchers is an important tool to better inform the architect, the city planner or the planner of tomorrow's territory. This article promotes an update of the knowledge bases on the study of Urban Form in Portugal, informed by scientific research produced in a Portuguese research centre that, during the second half of the twentieth century, promoted different research methodologies for the analysis of urban and housing space.
