Resumo: The fresco paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries in the North of Portugal, parallel to its catechetics and devotional function, also has an important role from a decorative point of view. That role takes on several aspects, from the existence of independent decorative compositions, with several kinds of language where the grotesque has a significant presence, to the mimic of constructive gadgets, retables and fabrics - as seen, for example, in the second plane of figurative compositions, in altar fronts and imitating textiles lining the main Chapel, some with an evident illusionist intention.

Ese papel asume varios aspectos que van desde la existencia de composiciones decorativas independientes, con varios tipos de lenguaje donde el grutesco tiene una presencia significativa, pasando por la imitación de aparejos constructivos, de retablos y de tejidos como, por ejemplo, en el segundo plano de las composiciones figurativas, en frontales de altar o imitando los tapices destinados a forrar la capilla mayor, algunos con evidente intención ilusionista, percibiéndose que, en lo que respecta a los motivos de imitación de tejidos, muchos de ellos tenían como referencia tejidos propios de la época.Paralelamente à função catequética e devocional, a pintura a fresco dos séculos XV e XVI no Norte de Portugal, tem um importante papel do ponto de vista decorativo.
