This phase is particularly demanding in the innovation development process of healthcare technologies: long and expensive processes of development postpone the financial return and the strong scientific nature of these technologies presents a higher risk for failure compared with traditional ones. But besides these characteristics, what other factors influence the valorization of healthcare technologies and are determinants for overcoming ‘the valley of death’ phase? This thesis aims to identify and analyze the factors that influence the transferring through licensing of healthcare technologies from R&D Centres to the market. In the first part, we will carry out a bibliographic survey and interviews with representative players of the healthcare innovation ecosystem in Portugal (venture capitalists, research centres, higher education institutions, companies, technological parks, incubators, and associations) to exhaustively identify and categorize these factors. In the second part, we will elaborate and distribute a questionnaire comprehensively through the national players of the healthcare innovation ecosystem to evaluate the importance of each identified factor in the context of our country. To finalize this work, we will study several models of success and propose solutions to tackle the identified factors. This study will allow delineating strategies for improving the valorization of healthcare technologies from academia.O ‘vale da morte’ é uma fase crítica na transição de inovações da investigação académica para o mercado. Esta fase é particularmente exigente no processo do desenvolvimento de tecnologias em saúde humana: processos de desenvolvimento longos e dispendioso adiamo retorno financeiro e uma forte natureza científica destas tecnologias apresentam um maior risco de falhanço em comparação com tecnologias tradicionais. Mas para além destas características, que outros fatores influenciam a valorização de tecnologias de saúde e que são determinantes para superar a fase do ‘vale da morte’? Esta dissertação visa identificar e analisar os fatores que influenciam a transferência de tecnologias em saúde, através de licenciamentos, dos centros de I&D em Portugal para o mercado. Numa primeira fase, realizaremos um levantamento bibliográfico e entrevistas com representantes dos intervenientes do ecossistema de inovação em saúde em Portugal (capitalistas de risco, centros de I&D, instituições de ensino superior, empresas, parques tecnológicos, incubadoras e associações), para exaustivamente identificar e categorizar estes fatores. Numa segunda fase, elaboraremos e distribuiremos um questionário pelos intervenientes nacionais do ecossistema de inovação em saúde, de forma a avaliar a importância de cada fator identificado no nosso país. Para complementar este estudo, serão também estudados vários modelos de sucesso e propostas soluções para ultrapassar os fatores identificados.
