Para isso deve ser identificado atempadamente e intercetado por profissionais que atuam diretamente na área. Este trabalho apela à compreensão de quem são os alunos em risco de abandonar a escola, quais os fatores que estão na base deste problema e quais as repercussões a que estes jovens estão sujeitos. Para além desta compreensão, visa também a discussão do que é feito pelas instituições que preveem e promovem a irradicação do abandono da escolaridade à luz dos contributos de diferentes profissionais que trabalham diretamente com esta problemática. O desenho metodológico deste estudo é de carácter exploratório e baseia-se numa pesquisa qualitativa. A técnica escolhida para a recolha de dados foi uma entrevista mediante a aplicação de um guião criado especificamente para este estudo. A amostra deste estudo foi formada por técnicos que trabalham esta problemática, pertencentes a Estabelecimentos de Educação, Ensino e Formação e à Comissão de Proteção de Crianças e Jovens da Área Metropolitana do Porto. Em termos gerais, este estudo revela a riqueza dos conhecimentos da experiência de cada um dos entrevistados, apesar das práticas de intervenção serem baseadas na legislação imposta. Os resultados mostram que os alunos que mais propicia têm para abandonar a escola não têm apoio familiar, provêm de famílias com dificuldades económicas que não valorizam a escola e manifestam baixas expectativas em relação aos seus filhos. Estes, por sua vez, revelam dificuldades de aprendizagem e integração escolar, o que origina falta de motivação e de autoestima e ganham um maior interesse em procurar a sua independência financeira. Nem estes alunos nem as suas famílias têm consciência dos obstáculos que o abandono escolar os pode causar. O acompanhamento realizado aos alunos poderia ser muito mais eficaz se o número de técnicos, como por exemplo os assistentes sociais, aumentasse de modo a acompanharem o menor e a sua família, mediarem o seu relacionamento familiar, compreenderem o que está na origem destes comportamentos e darem respostas mais variadas a esta problemática. Early school leaving is a major concern which affects students, learning institutions and even the country. To be solved, it must be identified in time and have immediate action from professionals who work in the field. This project appeals to the understanding of who are the students, who may be at risk of leaving school, which factors are in the basis of this problem, as well as the later repercussions to which these young men and women will need to deal. Further to the main goal, this project also tends to approach the solutions created by institutions which foresee and promote the eradication of school dropouts and the vision of different experts who deal directly with this issue. This study is an exploratory methodical approach and is based in a qualitative research. To gather the data, a detailed interview with a specific script was made. The main subject of this study was discussed with professionals in Educational Institutions and with the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People at Risk from the Metropolitan Area of Oporto. Overall, this study reveals the vast and accurate knowledge of each and every one of the experienced interviewees, despite the intervention practices being applied by the legislation. The results showed that students are more likely to abandon school because they have no family support: their families are dealing with financial issues and do not see education with any sort of meaning or purpose and they low their children’s morals towards learning. The children, then, begin to reveal difficulties in learning and even with social interaction, which may cause lack of motivation and self-esteem, leading to a major interest in seeking financial independence. Neither these students, nor their families have the conscience of the life obstacles and restrictions that can cause them.
