Resumo: Some considerations are made about current child psychiatry research and its future challenge. We analyse some studies about parental psychopathological influence in the early relationship, mentioning obstacles and advantages of some clinical and epidemiological research methods. We emphasize the value of interaction, observation and the use of videoscopy in infant clinical research. In Portugal, the lack of motivation to work in mental health research is an impediment to establishing clinical and training priorities.
