A dissertação que se apresenta no âmbito do Mestrado em Ilustração Artística “Arte Pastoril - Alfabeto Gráfico” centrou-se em criar um Alfabeto Gráfico tendo como inspiração a Arte Pastoril, maioritariamente do Alentejo. Para a concretização e desenvolvimento deste projecto, foi essencial optar por uma metodologia de trabalho baseada na investigação, recolha, selecção e análise de elementos decorativos que compõem peças de Arte Pastoril em Portugal. Estas, caracterizam-se por serem artefactos construídos por pastores, na sua maioria utensílios domésticos utilizados no seu dia-a-dia. O processo criativo inerente a criação do Alfabeto Gráfico constituído por cinquenta (50) caracteres e ornamentos base, procurou evidenciar a riqueza visual e autenticidade dos elementos decorativos das peças pastoris, que serviram como fonte de inspiração para a criação de uma nova linguagem gráfica15 que tem como ponto de partida o passado e o património cultural. Numa fase inicial, foi efectuada uma pesquisa teórica sobre a temática em estudo, da qual se salienta o trabalho realizado pelo autor Fernando Galhano16 em 1968 e que é a grande referência teórica e visual desta investigação. Paralelamente foi efectuado um levantamento fotográfico às peças de Arte Pastoril expostas no Museu Municipal de Estremoz Professor Joaquim Vermelho e foram realizadas visitas de estudo às peças expostas no Museu Nacional de Etnologia de Lisboa, onde se encontra o maior espolio de Arte Pastoril em Portugal. Pretendeu-se através da procura da espontaneidade das manifestações artísticas populares, recolher elementos genuínos e identificativos da nossa cultura, para desenvolver um estilo ilustrativo próprio que valorize e cruze desta forma várias áreas: as artes decorativas, a ilustração, o design, a etnografia e o património; ABSTRACT: «Pastoral Art – Graphic Alfabet» For the Masters of Artistic Illustration "Pastoral Art - Graphic Alphabet", this dissertation focused on creating a Graphic Alphabet taking as inspiration the Pastoral Art of Alentejo. For the implementation and development of this project, it was crucial to opt for a working methodology based on the research, collection, selection and analysis of the decorative elements that compose Pastoral Art objects in Portugal. Those are characterised by being artefacts built by shepherds, mostly household items used in daily life. The creative process intrinsic to the creation of the Graphic Alphabet which consists of fifty (50) characters and base ornaments, aspire to highlight the visual richness and authenticity of the decorative elements of the pastoral objects, which served as a source of inspiration for the creation of a new graphic language that emerges from former times and cultural heritage. At an early stage, a theoretical research was made on the subject under study, and the noticeable work carried out by the author Fernando Galhano17 in 1968 became the main theoretical and visual reference of this investigation. Also a photographic survey to the Pastoral Art objects exhibited in the Joaquim Vermelho Museum in Estremoz was carried out in parallel, as well as some study visits to the National Museum of Ethnology in Lisbon, where we can find the largest Pastoral Art booty in Portugal.
