Resumo: | Brain damage resulting from accidents can lead to a serious alteration of the patient's life. Injuries to this organ, have been studied for a long period in order to understand the damages that a specific load can induce, and help in the development of protection systems to prevent them. In the beginning, impact tests were made in cadavers and even living humans, however it had some limitations, such as the fact that it was not possible to measure the various necessary variables during a serious test. Finite element simulations were the solution, that evolved from geometrically simple models, to more complex ones due to the advances in the computer processing power. The recent models produce results with a high degree of biofidelity, but they lack in some geometric precision, mainly regarding the gyri and the sulci of the brain. Due to this, this thesis aimed to create a model with these exact structures so it can be used in further simulations and aid in the creation of better injury prevention systems. Based on the results achieved in this thesis, it may be possible that the variances registered between the reference data and the simulation, could be due to the inclusion of the gyri and the sulci in the brain model, however further testing should be carried out so the model can be validated. |
