Paradoxalmente, é do senso comum que ler (e mais ainda, saber ler) é uma competência imprescindível para se alcançar sucesso a nível do contexto escolar e a nível social e profissional, o que significa que a importância da leitura não se restringe apenas aos anos que os alunos passam em ambiente escolar. Nesta investigação procurou-se indagar se os nossos alunos têm consciência da importância da leitura, se estão devidamente motivados para lerem, se os seus indicadores motivacionais se mantêm ao longo dos 2º e 3º ciclos e se a complexidade lexical contribui de alguma forma para a (des) motivação dos jovens alunos perante a leitura. Para tal, e através da reflexão e da investigação, pretende-se contribuir para a elucidação de todos os agentes educativos, da comunidade educativa em geral e dos professores em particular, acerca da temática em estudo. Dentro desta perspetiva, propusemo-nos levar a cabo um estudo empírico numa escola em que os índices culturais e as perspetivas culturais e profissionais são muito reduzidos, aplicando um inquérito a 100 alunos do 5º ao 9º ano de escolaridade.We live in a technological era, where new ways of accessing knowledge keep developing in an overpowering rhythm. Due to this growth, our students can access endless resources which place reading, in his traditional way, in an inferior position in their list of preferences. Paradoxically, however, it is known that reading (especially to know how to read) is a very important skill when one is reaching for scholastic success as well as for professional and social success. This means that the importance of reading isn´t just bound to the years of learning spent in a scholarly environment. The aim of this research was to find out whether our students are aware of the importance of reading, whether they are motivated to the reading activity, whether their motivational indicators are kept during the 2nd and 3rd cycles and finally, whether, in anyway, the lexical complexity contributes to (de)motivate students to reading. In order to achieve the aimed goal, it is intended to provide a contribution to the enlightening of education agents, educational community and particularly teachers about the studied matter by means of its analysis and research.
