Resumo: After considering the concept and limits of children's literature, the article studies the works of the Portuguese writer Agustina Bessa-Luís (1922-2019) in this field: A Memória de Giz, 1983; Dentes de rato, 1987; Vento, areia e amoras bravas, 1990; O soldado romano, 2004; O Dourado, 2007, and two of the Contos Amarantinos, 1987: "O menino grão-de-milho" and "As duas irmãs Fabianas". The article claims that, in most of the texts, it is noticeable an autobiographical background and a cosmovision close to that which the author reveals in her work "for adults". It also argues that two of the books constitute a kind of documentary about the birth of a writer and admits that the transgression of the codes of the children's and youth market is the reason that explains a not particularly enthusiastic reception of Agustina's work in this field.
