O clima mediterrâneo, propício à ocorrência de incêndios florestais, favorece o seu desenvolvimento, pelo que tem existido um grande investimento na prevenção e no combate aos incêndios. É notório que, ao longo dos tempos, tanto os meios como as técnicas usadas para combater os incêndios florestais tiveram uma evolução considerável. Porém, o grande investimento no aumento e na modernização dos meios e das técnicas de combate não se traduziu, como seria expectável, na redução de grandes incêndios florestais.Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho visa entender por que razão é que, apesar dessa notável evolução dos meios e das técnicas de combate, a área queimada por grandes incêndios florestais não só não diminuiu, como, pelo contrário, a sua tendência aponta para o aumento da área individual dos maiores incêndios.Para realizar a presente investigação, tomou-se como área de estudo o denominado Pinhal Interior, por ser uma das regiões portuguesas mais fustigadas por grandes incêndios florestais durante o período em estudo. A metodologia usada baseou-se no levantamento de dados sobre a população, o uso do solo e a área queimada pelos grandes incêndios florestais dos últimos 40 anos, assim como na recolha de elementos que permitiram estabelecer a evolução do número de meios e das técnicas envolvidas no combate, ao longo desse igual período de tempo. As conclusões sugerem que o aumento da área dos maiores incêndios tenha resultado das alterações introduzidas na estrutura da população, com consequências a nível do uso do solo e da falta de gestão dos espaços rurais, como também de algumas modificações nas técnicas de combate e nas prioridades estabelecidas para a defesa da floresta contra incêndios.The Portuguese territory, especially over the last 50 years, has suffered from the scourge of fires. The Mediterranean climate, conducive to the occurrence of forest fires, favors their development, so there has been a great investment in preventing and fighting fires. It is clear that, over time, both the means and the techniques used to fight forest fires have evolved considerably.
