Resumo: Siblings are an integral part of the development of children born in families with more than one child, since they allow them to learn a set of values that derives from fraternal interactions. It is intended, therefore, to analyze the importance of siblings in children’s literature, particularly when it comes to picture books. We conclude that the portrayal of siblings in children’s literature has been overlooked, and that there is a clear predominance of works dealing with the birth of a new sibling over all other themes. We also undertook a more detailed analysis of a corpus composed of four children’s books centered on this theme, published in Portugal in 2016, with the purpose of proceeding with a thematic categorization, a narrative description, an analysis of the verisimilitude of the texts when compared to articles on similar theme and the relevance of the paratexts.
