Sabe-se, também, que esta assimetria se desenvolve desde o nascimento até à vida adulta, provavelmente por estimulação auditiva e linguística. Contudo, é desconhecida a simetria e conectividade do FA em indivíduos com surdez congénita pré-lingual. O objetivo do presente trabalho consiste na análise da conectividade e lateralização (simetria) do FA em doentes surdos congénitos, comparando a indivíduos normais e correlacionando com a aquisição precoce/tardia de língua gestual portuguesa (LGP).Métodos: Adquiriram-se imagens de tensor de difusão (DTI) de 22 indivíduos, 10 com surdez congénita pré-lingual e 12 com audição normal. Realizou-se a tractografia probabilística do FA de ambos os hemisférios, dividindo-o em dois segmentos, um com origem no giro temporal superior e outro no giro temporal médio, ambos com destino no lobo frontal inferior. Recolheu-se o número de streamlines de cada segmento para cálculo do índice de lateralização (LI) e posterior análise estatística.Resultados: Evidenciou-se uma redução significativa do número de streamlines dos FA esquerdos nos indivíduos surdos em comparação com os indivíduos normais. Revelou-se ainda, na globalidade dos sujeitos, uma lateralização do FA para o hemisfério esquerdo. Não se observaram diferenças relativamente à aquisição precoce/tardia da LGP.Discussão e conclusão: O presente trabalho demonstrou uma assimetria do FA em todos os sujeitos para a esquerda, indo de encontro à miríade de estudos realizados neste aspeto. Demonstrou ainda uma redução das streamlines/conectividade dos FA esquerdos nos surdos, não correlacionável com a aquisição da LGP. Isto sugere que o FA deverá ter outras funções que não apenas o processamento fonológico, e que a capacidade de linguagem destes indivíduos possa ter remodelado a sua conectividade, apesar da sua surdez. Conclui-se ser necessária uma investigação adicional, nomeadamente no que toca a análise da lateralização do FA em idades pré-linguais, bem como para clarificar a real função do FA na linguagem.Background: A leftward asymmetry of the arcuate fasciculus (AF) is well described in healthy individuals nowadays. It is also known that this asymmetry develops from birth to adulthood, probably due to auditory and linguistic input stimulation. Nonetheless, the symmetry and connectivity of the AF in individuals with prelingual congenital hearing loss in unknown. The main goal of this article is the analysis of the connectivity and lateralization (symmetry) of the AF in congenital prelingual deaf subjects, compared to normal individuals, and to check any correlation with early/late acquisition of Portuguese sign language (LGP).Methods: Diffusion tensor images (DTI) were obtained from 22 subjects, 10 with prelingual congenital deafness, and 12 with normal hearing. The probabilistic tractography of the AF of both hemispheres was performed, dividing the AF in two segments, one originating from the superior temporal gyrus, and the other from the middle temporal gyrus, both ending in the lower frontal areas. The number of streamlines of each segment was obtained to calculate the lateralization index (LI) and for subsequent statistical analysis.Results: It was found a significant reduction of the number of streamlines of the left AF in deaf subjects compared to normal subjects. A leftward asymmetry of the AF was also revealed in the subjects overall. No differences were found regarding an early/late acquisition of LGP.Conclusions: It was demonstrated a leftward asymmetry of the AF in all subjects, favouring the myriad of studies performed in this theme. It was also found a reduction in the streamlines/connectivity of the left AFs in deaf subjects, not correlated with the LGP acquisition, suggesting the AF may have functions other than just phonological processing, and that the language ability of these individuals may have reshaped their connectivity, despite their hearing loss.
