Sustainable competitive advantages: an exploratory study of the brazilian cell phone sector

Resumo: In an environment of rapid changes one should seek definitions of what would be the strategic solutions adopted by organizations to ensure a competitive edge. This article is targeted to identify and verify the longevity of potential competitive advantages in Brazil’s mobile telephone sector through the analysis of the strategic actions taken by its operators between 2000 and 2008.Therefore, a two stage qualitative research with exploratory-descriptive features was adopted and carried out. The first stage saw the development of a theoretical framework based on the theory of competitive advantage. In the second step, the impact of strategic actions with the potential to become a competitive advantage in the four major mobile phone companies in the country was analyzed, and the examination of the sustainability of competitive advantages created from those actions was also undertaken. The study concluded that, although being a highly dynamic and competitive sector, there is evidence of the occurrence of a sustainable competitive advantage in the mobile telephone sector in Brazil.

El objetivo principal de este artículo fue identificar y verificar la longevidad de las ventajas competitivas del sector de telefonía móvil en Brasil a través del análisis de las acciones estratégicas adoptadas por las operadoras entre los años 2000 y 2008. Para ello, se realizó una investigación cualitativa de carácter exploratorio-descriptiva, con dos etapas. En un primer momento se constituyó un marco teórico basado en la teoría de la ventaja competitiva. Posteriormente, se analizó el impacto de las acciones estratégicas con potencial para convertirse en ventajas competitivas en las cuatro mayores compañías de telefonía móvil del país y se analizó la sostenibilidad de las ventajas competitivas creadas a partir de estas acciones. Se concluyó que a pesar del dinamismo del sector, existen evidencias de la presencia de la ventaja competitiva sostenible en la telefonía móvil en Brasil.Em um ambiente de rápidas transformações buscam-se definições sobre as soluções estratégicas adotadas pelas organizações para assegurar sua competitividade. O principal objetivo deste artigo foi identificar e verificar a longevidade de vantagens competitivas do setor de telefonia móvel no Brasil a partir da análise de ações estratégicas adotadas pelas operadoras entre os anos de 2000 e 2008. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa de natureza exploratório-descritiva com duas etapas. Na primeira, foi constituído um arcabouço teórico baseado na teoria da vantagem competitiva. Na segunda, foi analisada a incidência de ações estratégicas com potencial de se tornarem vantagens competitivas nas quatro maiores empresas de telefonia móvel do país e examinada a sustentabilidade das vantagens competitivas criadas a partir dessas ações.
