Resumo: | Grazing and fertilization are cleterminant factors that modify botanical composition and quality of pasture. A grazing experiment with pear) millet grass (Pennisettan american um (L.) Leeke) was conducted at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, to evaluate lhe effects of nitrogen leveis (0, 150, 300, 450 e 600 kg hal) on botanical composition and quality of pasture components. It was used beef heifers in grazing to maintain the intended forage offer of 10 kg DM 100 kg' LW -1 , according the put-and-take technique (M orr and LUCAS, 1952), in an completely randomized design with two replication. Pasture evaluation were made every 28 days, with cut of pasture at sou' levei, and subsequent hand separation aí components. The nitrogen leveis no had effect about botanical composition, that showed expressive cont ri but ion of Digitaria adscendens and Brachioria plantotinea.Nitrogen increase crude protein (P<0,00 I ) and decrease "in vitro"organic matter digestibility of components (P<0,05). |

O pastejo e adubação são fatores determinantes de modificações na composição botânica e qualidade da pastagem. Um experimento com milhem (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) em pastejo contínuo foi conduzido no Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS, para avaliar os efeitos de doses de nitrogénio (0, 150, 300, 450 e 600 kg ha -I) sobre a composição botânica e a qualidade dos componentes cia pastagem. A pastagem foi utilizada por novilhas de sobreano, com uma oferta de forragem de 10 kg MS 100 kg 1W dia'', de acordo com a técnica "put- and-t a ke" (MOTT e LUCAS, 1952), num delineamento completamente casualizado com duas repetições. As avaliações da pastagem foram feitas a cada 28 dias. com corte cia pastagem rente ao solo, e posterior separação manual dos componen- tes. Não houve efeito dos níveis de nitrogênio sobre a composição botânica da pastagem, a qual apresentou expressiva contribuição de Digitaria adscendens e Blochiaria plantaginea. O nitrogênio aumentou o teor de proteína bruta dos componentes (17<0,001) e reduziu a digestibilidade"in vitro"da matéria orgânica (P<0,05). Departamento de Diagnóstico e Pesquisa Agropecuária.
