Implications for the mental health of the elderly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

The pandemic has brought with it several factors that may favour changes in mental health condition, however, in this pandemic context, little has been discussed. In the context of the current pandemic, the elderly population, included in the group at risk for contagion with COVID-19, is a factor that can be considered a risk for the development of emotional changes motivated by anxiety and fear of contamination and also of the unknown, presenting itself as a stressful situation during the isolation period, which can cause changes in mental health condition, as well as aggravate the conditions of those who are already affected. Therefore, it is necessary to take a look at this population in the current context, aiming to reduce the harmful effects of COVID-19, in order to reduce the impact of psychological changes in this population, as well as to soften the financial burden in the cost of treatment due to changes in the psychological health condition that affect them.
