Resumo: Objective: To analyze the understanding of undergraduate Nursing students at a Public University on the topic 'Human Error and Patient Safety'. Method: Descriptive exploratory study with a quantitative approach. A total of 138 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study. A structured questionnaire with closed questions was used, where the data were tabulated in spreadsheets, and the absolute and relative frequencies were statically estimated. Results: It was observed that 63% of the students disagreed that making mistakes in the health area is inevitable. They disagreed that competent professionals (64.5%) and committed students (71.0%) do not make mistakes that cause harm to patients. The majority agreed that when an error occurs, all those involved should discuss its occurrence (89.9%) and that an effective prevention strategy should be instituted from the error (94.9%), as well as they agreed a must institute systemic analysis of the facts (94.9%) to implement human error prevention measures. Conclusion: Students have different understandings of the subject, indicating that they lack the awareness that to err is human. However, they recognize and value the discussion of the error after its occurrence by all those involved, but, until then, there is great divergence in terms of communicating to the patient and his family about the occurrence of the error, whether it is harmful or not to the patient. patient.
