ACCIDENT WITH BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL AT A UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO: HISTORICAL SERIES 2016-2020

Resumo: Objective: to identify and characterize occupational accidents with exposure to biological material that occurred in a University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, from 2016 to 2020. Method: This is a documental, retrospective, descriptive research with a quantitative approach and analysis of secondary data collected from the documents of the Hospital Infection Control Commission of the aforementioned university hospital. Results: in the established period, there were 229 accidents at work with exposure to biological material involving the health team. There was a prevalence of females, 175 (76.4%) as the main victims of accidents. Of the total number of cases, 62 (27.1%) occurred among nursing technicians and 61 (26.6%) among medical residents. The surgical procedure was the main circumstance of the accident in 76 (33.2%) cases. It was found that percutaneous exposure was the most frequent 179 (78.2%), using a needle with a lumen as a device, 107 (46.7%). Conclusion: knowing the incidence of accidents at work with exposure to biological material in University Hospitals allows the development of effective protocols in the management of assistance to students and health professionals.

Método: Se trata de una investigación documental, retrospectiva, descriptiva, con abordaje cuantitativo y análisis de datos secundarios. recogidos de los documentos de la Comisión de Control de Infecciones Hospitalarias del mencionado hospital universitario. Resultados: en el período establecido, ocurrieron 229 accidentes de trabajo con exposición a material biológico involucrando al equipo de salud. Hubo predominio del sexo femenino, 175 (76,4%) como principales víctimas de accidentes. Del total de casos, 62 (27,1%) ocurrieron entre técnicos de enfermería y 61 (26,6%) entre médicos residentes. El procedimiento quirúrgico fue la principal circunstancia del accidente en 76 (33,2%) casos. Se encontró que la exposición percutánea fue la más frecuente 179 (78,2%), utilizando como dispositivo una aguja con lumen, 107 (46,7%). Conclusión: conocer la incidencia de accidentes de trabajo con exposición a material biológico en los Hospitales Universitarios permite desarrollar protocolos efectivos en la gestión de la asistencia a estudiantes y profesionales de la salud.Objetivo: identificar e caracterizar os acidentes de trabalho com exposição à material biológico ocorridos em um Hospital Universitário do Rio de Janeiro, no período de 2016 a 2020.
