Graphic representation of functions: an analysis of the main difficulties of High School students

Resumo: In this article the results of a broader research that aims to understand the difficulties of high school students about the content of Function are discussed. The subjects of the research were students of the 3rd year of High School of a state school of Paraná. It was used as instrument of data collection a test with questions that approached the content of Function, its concepts, its representations and applications. In this work, the questions related to graphical representations of functions are explored. Results related to the students' difficulties regarding the concept of Function are also presented, as it was found that most of them occur due to the lack of understanding of the related mathematical concepts. On the graphical representation of functions, the students presented difficulties from the correct representation of the points in the Cartesian plane, in the identification of the domain to draw the graph, until the understanding of the Constant Function.

Os sujeitos da pesquisa foram alunos de 3 Ano do Ensino Médio, de uma escola da rede estadual, do Paraná. Foi utilizado como instrumento de coleta de dados uma prova com questões que abordavam o conteúdo de Função, seus conceitos, suas representações e aplicações. Neste trabalho, são exploradas as questões relacionadas às representações gráficas de funções.  São apresentados, também, resultados referentes às dificuldades dos alunos acerca do conceito de Função, visto que se constatou que a maior parte das dificuldades apresentadas pelos estudantes ocorre devido à falta de compreensão dos conceitos matemáticos relacionados.
