Rocha’s blades: babelic allegories of ruin

Resumo: This essay engages with the concept of ruin as articulated by the Portuguese poet Jaime Rocha. Employing a ruinological analysis, we scrutinize Rocha’s work, Lâmina (2014) published by Língua Morta, drawing on the theoretical framework presented in Ruinologias. Ensaios sobre os destroços do presente (2016), printed by Editora da UFSC. Centering on the philosophical theme of the landscape as the «allegory of ruin» our analysis particularly focuses on Rocha’s final poem in this collection, titled ‘Ruínas.’ The poet endeavors to imbue the concept of ruin with a sense of fluidity, albeit a paradoxical one. Through poetic decomposition, Rocha’s gaze seeks out fragments and detritus within the landscape, constructing scenarios that oscillate between a climate of peace and one of conflict. The simultaneous suspension of the past and the architectural rescue through poetry contribute to a nuanced exploration of the allegory of ruin. This examination allows us to establish connections between Jaime Rocha’s approach and the perspectives of authors investigating the allegory of ruin within the Benjaminian tradition.

Il cherche à réaliser une analyse ruinologique de l’ouvrage ‘Lâmina’, de 2014, publié par la maison d’édition ‘Lingua Morta’, théorisant à partir des différents textes théoriques de l’ouvrage ‘Ruinologias : Ensaios sobre os destroços do presente’ publié par UFSC, Brésil. Reprenant le sujet philosophique de ‘l’allégorie de la ruine’, l’analyse se concentre, en particulier, sur son dernier poème, dans cet ouvrage intitulé précisément ‘Ruines’. Busca-se efetivar uma análise ruinológica da obra Lâmina (2014), lançado pela editora Língua Morta, teorizando a partir dos vários textos teóricos da obra Ruinologias: Ensaios sobre destroços do presente, de 2016, lançado pela editora da UFSC. Tomando o assunto filosófico da paisagem na “alegoria da ruína”, centra-se a análise, em especial, sobre o seu derradeiro poema, nesta obra, intitulado, justamente, “Ruínas”. Jaime Rocha tenta tornar a ruína uma fluidez. Porém, uma fluidez paradoxal. Rocha produz uma decomposição poética, num olhar que caça os fragmentos, os detritos da paisagem. Ele cria cenários onde tanto um clima de paz quanto um clima de conflito convivem. Há tanto a suspensão do passado, quanto o seu resgate arquitetural pela poesia. Isso tudo nos possibilita levantar relações entre Jaime Rocha e autores que se debruçam sobre a alegoria da ruína por uma perspectiva benjaminiana.
