Pathway detours to nowhere: women’s representation and the non-candidates

Resumo: The paper discusses how studies of recruitment and selection in political elites treat the female non-representation in parliament. It points to a specific gap in the Brazilian literature, which is what the parties do not produce, people who do not even try to enter in the competition. After a review of the state of the art of studies on the recruitment and the constraints for election, what leads to a female sub-representation, it argues how the theoretical proposition of the rule of anticipated reactions, from Mathew Crenson, can be fruitfully used in these studies to understand the rationality that leads to non-postulation of offices. Presents, finally, some roads to a research agenda that attempts to address the issue.

Após uma revisão do estado da arte sobre os estudos de recrutamento e sobre as condicionantes para a eleição, que levam a uma sub-representação feminina, argumenta como a proposição teórica da regra das reações antecipadas, de Mathew Crenson, pode ser utilizada proficuamente nestes estudos para entender a racionalidade que leva à não-postulação de cargos.
