The political dimension of materialism between Quentin Meillassoux's speculative proposal and Louis Althusser's theory of philosophy

Resumo: In this article we propose to establish a relationship between the "speculative materialism" of Quentin Meillassoux and the materialist philosophy of Louis Althusser. If both materialisms are defined on the basis of the affirmation of an objective dimension, external to the subject, and of the possibility of knowing it, they nevertheless differ on a fundamental point: the register of the space constituted by social practices that exceeds and determines philosophy. The aim of this article is, in this sense, to elucidate and ponder this distance between one materialism and the other, in order to account for the difference between them in terms of the scope and political meaning of the theses that characterize them.

Si ambos materialismos se definen a partir de la afirmación de una dimensión objetiva, exterior al sujeto, y de la posibilidad de conocerla, se distancian, sin embargo, en un punto fundamental: el registro del espacio constituido por las prácticas sociales que excede y determina a la filosofía. El objetivo de este artículo es, en este sentido, dilucidar y ponderar esta distancia entre un materialismo y el otro, a los fines de dar cuenta de la diferencia que se juega entre ellos en cuanto al alcance y el sentido político de las tesis que los caracterizan.Neste artigo pretendemos estabelecer uma relação entre o "materialismo especulativo" de Quentin Meillassoux e a filosofia materialista de Louis Althusser. Se ambos os materialismos se definem a partir da afirmação de uma dimensão objetiva, externa ao sujeito, e da possibilidade de conhecê-lo, distanciam-se, porém, em um ponto fundamental: o registro do espaço constituído pelas práticas sociais que ultrapassam e determina à filosofia.
