Resumo: The traditional design of the toponymic studies involved the reflection on the origin and significance of geographical names in a descriptive perspective: etymology, formation (affixes), recurrence, with the focus mainly on purely intra-linguistic aspects. When considering a toponymic taxonomy, one would take into account the formal composition, that is, its significant, without questioning other relationships of extra-linguistic nature, such as the social, political and economic contexts, among others (Adams, 1998).
