Translanguage in Higher Education:: for a critic linguistic education that values the student’s voice

Resumo: This article, situated within Applied Linguistics (AL), especifically in Indisciplinary AL(MOITA LOPES, 2006) and in decolonial studies (MIGNOLO, 2018; QUIJANO, 2007;WALSH, 2018) aims to discuss the discursive functionality of translanguaging in the contextof university students of Portuguese as an Additional Language in the Portuguese FlagshipProgram program of the University of Georgia (UGA/USA). After presenting a briefdefinition of translanguaging (GARCÍA 2011; CANAGARAJAH, 2013, among others), weaddress the intertwining between translanguaging and decoloniality. The data discussed in thispaper are part of the ongoing doctoral thesis of the first author, under the supervision of thesecond author, and were collected during her Visiting Scholar program (Doutorado SanduíchePSDE/CAPES), through a critical-collaborative methodology (NININ; MAGALHÃES,2017). The research corpus comprised the observation of 13 classes, which ranged from 3 to10 students per session, during the months of September/2021 to March/2022. Data analysisindicates that translanguaging is a relevant pedagogical resource, playing an important role incomplex and interdependent areas of the student’s life, namely: social, academic, linguistic and personal areas.

Para basear as discussõesaqui propostas, iniciamos com uma breve definição de translinguagem, a partir das perspectivasde García (2011), Canagarajah (2013a, 2013b), entre outros. Passamos, então, a tratar dosentrelaçamentos entre Translinguagem e Decolonialidade. Os dados da discussão aqui propostafazem parte da tese de doutorado – sob construção – da autora, sob orientação da coautora, eforam coletados durante o seu programa de Doutorado Sanduíche PSDE/CAPES, através deuma metodologia crítico-colaborativa (NININ; MAGALHÃES, 2017). O corpus da pesquisa foicomposto pela observação de 13 aulas, que variaram entre 3 e 10 alunos por sessão, duranteos meses de setembro/2021 a março/2022.
