Resumo: Located in the mountain region of the state of Espirito Santo, the municipality of Itarana was founded by immigrants from Veneto, Italy, in the second half of the 19th century. Nowadays, the descendants of Italian immigrants assume a prominent position in the region not only by a large number of descendants, but also by economic and cultural influence performed among people who live there. Considering these facts, this study, which follows the approach of Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1972), aims to highlight the influence of speakers’ gender in the realization of /r/ in the Portuguese spoken by the descendants of Italians immigrants, in the rural area of Itarana. Data were collected through thirty-four interviews with descendants of Italian immigrants, divided into gender, in order to analyze the realization of the phoneme / r / and see if there is a change in progress toward the presence of traces of Venetian in the Portuguese spoken in this community. The results show that the gender favor the use of the variant influenced by the Italian dialect.
