Significados das vivências de cuidadoras do companheiro com câncer : uma análise existencial

Difficulties of the disease invade the patient´s existence when cancer is experienced and they are transmitted to the care giver. As the care giver of her partner, the wife also experiences feelings and difficulties. A relationship of reciprocal and constant influences occurs in which the two become one through care-giving. So that the existential situation may be understood, the meanings coped with by the wife as care-giver of her partner suffering from cancer are investigated. Likewise, the meaning of care in the face of her partner with cancer is analyzed. Current qualitative research based on Heidegger´s existential phenomenology has been performed by interviewing ten women who experienced care-giving of their partners between December 2013 and February 2014 in a town in the northwestern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. The women were asked the following questions: "How do you feel giving care to your partner suffering from cancer?" and "How do you feel taking care of yourself while giving care to your partner suffering from cancer?" Two methodical instances were taken into consideration for data analyses: vague and median comprehension, and interpretative comprehension. The women were given nom-de-plumes of biblical characters following the features demonstrated by them. Current investigation was approved by the Committee for Ethics and Research of the State University of Maringá by Protocol 478.948/2013. Analyses of results gave rise to two articles: "Meaning of experience of care-giver of partner suffering from cancer: an existential analysis" with the following three ontological themes: "Taking responsibility to be-with-the-other suffering from cancer"; "Learning to be strong in the wake of the weakness of the other" and "Learning to live with changes close to the other". The other article titled "Taking or not taking care as a woman when giving care to the partner with cancer", with two themes: "Relinquishing one´s own health to take care of one´s partner" and "Forgetting oneself to take care of the other". The responsibilities to care for one´s partner and the influence of feelings in care giving, even affected the couple´s affection were revealed through the interpretation of the subjects´ discourse. Further, when taking care of one´s partner, wives find it difficult to take care of themselves not only in female issues that provide them pleasure but also with regard to health. Results show that within the context of difficulties, there are feelings of affection that motivate the wife to continue her activities while being a care-giver and a wife. In the wake of her existential condition, the wife gives care and spends a lot of time in care-giving. Choosing between giving care to her partner and to herself is an important issue. The importance of developing specific nursing activities should be underlined with special reference to the individuality of these women who dedicate so much of themselves to the other.
