State, religion and the education of the citizen

Resumo: The obstacles and conflicts between the State and religion and current perspectives on the developments of this relationship with the education of the citizen are analyzed. The paper investigates the foundation of the modern State and its influence on the formation of modern and contemporary societies. It also shows the impact of the separation between religion and State to discuss that the citizen’s education leads towards enlightenment. Further, democratic and republican knowledge of citizens goes through the “rules of public education” (Diderot, 2000, p. 268). In fact, the State should be responsible for education in a constant dialogue with the various segments of society, so that ‘the object of education and the extent of lessons should provide him with plurality’. The central idea is that there may be a space for religious issues within the secular state, but they must be guided by reason that enlightens the citizen and they must be an expression of subjectivity and human freedom. Relationships between the State, Religion and Citizen Education should also include reflections about social inequality and the impact of religion on the maintenance or transformation of unjust social structures.

Hace una reflexión y un análisis de la fundación del Estado Moderno, y su influencia en la formación de las sociedades modernas y contemporáneas, así como evidencia los impactos de los presupuestos de la separación entre religión y Estado para considerar que la educación del ciudadano pasa por el esclarecimiento, y que este esclarecimiento democrático y republicano de los ciudadanos pasa por las “[...] reglas de una educación pública” (Diderot, 2000, p. 268), pues el Estado debe ser el responsable por la educación, en diálogo constante con los diversos sectores de la sociedad, de tal forma que ‘el objeto de la enseñanza y la extensión de las lecciones deben proporcionarse a la pluralidad’. La idea central es la de que puede existir un espacio para las cuestiones religiosas dentro del Estado laico, pero ellas deben ser orientadas por la razón que esclarece el ciudadano y sean expresión de la subjetividad y de la libertad humana. En las relaciones entre el Estado, la religión y la educación del ciudadano, cabe reflexionar sobre la desigualdad social y el impacto de la religión en el mantenimiento o en la transformación de estructuras sociales injustas. Este artigo objetiva apontar os entraves e os conflitos entre Estado e religião e as perspectivas atuais sobre os desdobramentos dessa relação com a educação do cidadão. Faz uma reflexão e análise da fundação do Estado Moderno, e sua influência na formação das sociedades modernas e contemporâneas, bem como evidencia os impactos dos pressupostos da separação entre religião e Estado para considerar que a educação do cidadão passa pelo esclarecimento, e que esse esclarecimento democrático e republicano dos cidadãos passa pelas “[...] regras de uma educação pública” (Diderot, 2000, p. 268), pois o Estado deve ser o responsável pela educação, em diálogo constante com os diversos setores da sociedade, de tal forma que ‘o objeto do ensino e a extensão das lições devem proporcionar-se à pluralidade’. A ideia central é a de que pode existir um espaço para as questões religiosas dentro do Estado laico, mas elas devem ser orientadas pela razão que esclarece o cidadão e seja expressão da subjetividade e da liberdade humana.
