Resumo: Amongst the factors of quality seedling production, the quality of substrates influences directly the success of production. Thus, the purpose of the present work was to evaluate the physical properties and the different substrates applicability consisting of different rates of vermiculite and a mixture of pinus rind and coal in the development of cucumber and chili seedling. The physical properties of substrate followed Smith and Pokorny’s method (1977). The green and dry raw material of the aerial part, the stature of seedling and the germination in both cultures were evaluated. Results showed that the physical properties of tested substrate (specific density, air space occupation, water filled space and total porosity) are close to the ideal values highlighted in literature. Moreover, the amount of vermiculite that provides the best results for the culture of the cucumber was in the average of 74.51%, although better results would be achieved if supplemental irrigation were used. As for the culture of the chili, the substrates used were not suitable and the variables that measure the plants phytomass are highly correlated and do not need to be completely measured.
