This thesis presents a study about eroticism in Gilka Machado‘s poetry. It specifically focuses on the meaning of eroticism experienced by the lyric self. This research is based on the hypothesis that the erotic experience does not reach concrete accomplishment, it is only found in an imaginary reality. The lyric self idealizes the loved one and experiences eroticism in an imaginary plane. Being so, our objective is to investigate the way eroticism is represented, under hermeneutic interpretation, observing the reflective behavior of the speaker in the face of love. To do so, our methodology comprehends the study of erotic poems and verification of the symbolic constructions, images and metafors that make the poetic language. The research corpus consists of erotic poems found in the books Cristais Partidos (1915), Estados de Alma (1917), Mulher Nua (1922), Meu Glorioso Pecado (1928) and Sublimação (1938). The theoretical background consists of three dialogues by Plato(1956): O Banquete, Fedro and Fédon, and also Bataille (2013), Octavio paz (1994, 1995, 1998, 2012, 2013), Mircea Eliade (2013) and Rudolf Otto (2007). Once the hypotheses are observed we finally present the conclusion that eroticism has a philosophical transcendental meaning. The lyric selfexperiences a contemplative feeling revealed in the universe of language.
