School democratization and social mobility in France: the empirical Sociology of Beaud, Truong and Pasquali

Resumo: The article discusses recent developments in French Sociology on the classic themes of educational inequalities and social mobility. We analyse recent works by Stéphane Beaud, Fabien Truong and Paul Pasquali, which are at the crossroads of the Sociology of youth, education, immigration and social mobility. The authors address the trajectories in Higher Education of young individuals issued from popular classes through qualitative and longitudinal research. The article explains the theoretical and methodological foundations of these post-Bourdieusian studies and presents their main contributions to the contemporary sociological debate. We emphasise the breadth and density of the research; the analytical framework of social mobility when considering “class migration”; the construction of the research object, which inserts the theme of “school longevity” into the broader picture of the implications of displacements in the social space. Social mobility.El artículo presenta desarrollos recientes en la Sociología Francesa sobre los temas clásicos de las desigualdades educativas y de la movilidad social. Elegimos hacerlo por medio del análisis de la producción de tres autores, Stéphane Beaud, Fabien Truong y Paul Pasquali, que se encuentran en la intersección de una Sociología de la juventud, de la educación, de la inmigración y de la movilidad social. Los tres abordan las trayectorias de jóvenes de clases populares en la Educación Superior, en el contexto actual de masificación de ese nivel de enseñanza en Francia, por intermedio de la investigación cualitativa y longitudinal. El artículo explica los fundamentos teóricos y metodológicos de estos estudios post-bourdieusianos y presenta sus principales contribuciones al debate sociológico contemporáneo. Destacamos la amplitud y la densidad de las investigaciones; el marco analítico de la movilidad social pensada como "migración de clase"; la construcción del objeto, que inserta el tema de la "longevidad escolar" en el marco más amplio de las implicaciones de los desplazamientos en el espacio social. Movilidad social.O artigo apresenta desenvolvimentos recentes na Sociologia Francesa sobre os temas clássicos das desigualdades educacionais e da mobilidade social. Escolhemos fazê-lo por meio da análise da produção de três autores, Stéphane Beaud, Fabien Truong e Paul Pasquali, que se situam no cruzamento entre uma sociologia da juventude, da educação, da imigração e da mobilidade social. Os três abordam trajetórias de jovens de classes populares no Ensino Superior, no contexto atual de massificação desse nível de ensino na França, por intermédio de pesquisa qualitativa e longitudinal. O artigo explicita os fundamentos teóricos e metodológicos desses estudos pós-bourdieusianos e apresenta seus principais aportes para o debate sociológico contemporâneo. Destacamos a amplitude e a densidade das pesquisas; o quadro analítico da mobilidade social pensada como “migração de classe”; a construção do objeto, que insere a questão da “longevidade escolar” no quadro mais amplo das implicações dos deslocamentos no espaço social.
